The Rotary Club of Allentown West - Western Lehigh County (AWRC or AW) was chartered on May 15, 1962. It was sponsored by the Allentown Rotary club, according to RI’s records.
Sponsoring RC:
The club was chartered under the name Western Lehigh County, and the sponsor club is listed in the RI History Group’s records as Allentown, PA. The Special Representative listed was Charles D. Snelling, of Allentown.
During the club’s organization, there is some correspondence between the District Governor of 743 at the time, Calvin Terry, and Rotary International, discussing the Rotary Club of Allentown and it’s release of territory to the Rotary Club of Western Lehigh County.
RI also found correspondence regarding the Rotary Club of Emmaus, who also released some of their territory to the new club, and who offered their blessings to the new club as well as to help out in any way they could. This does not, however, qualify Emmaus as a sponsor.
The name was officially changed to Allentown West – Western Lehigh County on 27 February 1974. RI only has the one Notification of Name Change form. This form does not indicate any changes in territory.”
Charter Members:
A list of the 1962 charter members of our club appears in the Appendix at the end of this article.
In 2015 a member bought on Craig’s List the table top Lectern with a brass plate attached that was given to AW Rotarians on June 22,1962 by the members of the Emmaus RC.
In the Fall of 2015 member Stan Drabick refinished it and we now use it weekly.
A copy of the program for the June 22, 1962 Charter event is in the Appendix. Here is the front page:
Presidents of the club:
A list of all club presidents appears in the Appendix at the end of this article.
Some lists of members appear in the Appendix as well.
Members at District Leadership Positions:
Yvette M. Palmer joined AWRC in 1989 as its first woman member. She served as the Area 1 Assistant Governor and, in 2002-03, served as D7430’s Governor, the first female to do so. She later served as the district foundation chair for 3 years and held Zone 32 positions in Membership and Foundation. She served on the faculty and as Regional Vice Chair of the Rotary Leadership Institute from 2002 to 2011.
William L. Weber joined AWRC in 1978 and served as Area 1 Assistant Governor and then as D7430 Governor for 2008-09. He also served on the faculty of the Rotary Leadership Institute.
William E. Palmer joined AWRC in 2001 having started in Rotary in 1995 in the Easton RC. He served as Area 3 Assistant Governor and then served as D7430 Governor in 2010-11. He served on the faculty and was D7430 site chair for the Rotary Leadership Institute from 2002 to 2011. He served as the District Newsletter Editor, District Secretary, and District Finance Chair, as well as the Paul Harris Society Coordinator for D7430.
Flora Sue Weber served as Area 1 Assistant Governor from 2013 to 2016.
Dr. Barbara Kistler in 2015 became the Chair of the D7430 PolioPlus committee.
Starting July 1, 2016, Herb Klotz served as the D7430 Membership Committee Chair thru June 30, 2018. In December of 2016 Herb was selected as D7430 Governor for RY 2019-20. During the 2016-17 Rotary year Herb led the effort that had two new RCs started in D7430, Whitehall Area, and Upper Perkioman.
Meeting Structure:
Judge Ed Cahn joined AWRC circa 1965 and was President in 1969-1970. During a September 2015 interview he said that Initially AWRC met as a Dinner club. The meetings included 45 minutes for food and 30 more for the Speaker.
Judge Cahn also recalled that in 1970 there were about 15 members and about 10 came to the meetings. Bob Nagle, a member since 1992, said that meetings always lasted about an hour as they still do now. They always met weekly.
Another member since 1999 says meetings lasted about an hour and almost all had a program.
Ernie Boll confirmed that when he joined AW in 1969 the members already had a bell and a club banner Vern Fenstermaker says that the club had the bell and banner when he joined in 1980. But Vern, as club Secretary, bought a new banner because the old base had become unstable. He says it’s the one being used today (2016).
In January 2015 a Rotary Information event was held to educate candidates for membership. Then in February 2015 the board approved adding two “Happy Hour” meetings each month from 5:30 to 6:30 P.M. These meetings started at the Holiday Inn in Breinigsville and still continue. The first half hour is fellowship, and the second is a business meeting. Programs are not yet being scheduled. Early in 2017 Membership Chair, Ginny Sandoval, started holding a "Mixer" / Networking meeting at different sites on the 2nd Tuesday.
Women in Rotary:
Until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. The United States Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary clubs do have a "business purpose" and are in some ways public-type organizations.
The RI constitutional change was made at the 1989 Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only" provision for all of Rotary. Since that time, women have become members and leaders of clubs and districts throughout the world. In 1995 the first 8 women District Governors took office.
Prior to 1989 the spouses of Rotarians could join a club and they were called “Rotary Anns.” They held monthly meetings and some AW spouses were members.
In 1989 Bob Randall proposed Yvette (Hausler) Palmer for membership; she was inducted and nobody quit. Gloria Zimmerman was the second female member and was sponsored by Ralph Zettlemoyer.
Meeting Locations:
The club's first meeting place was the Shankweiler Hotel in the small community of Fogelsville, PA. Vern Fenstermaker joined AWRC in 1980 and it was a dinner club then. In 1984 it was changed to a breakfast club to attract new members.
The club has been meeting since then at various locations including:
The Tourist Inn in Kuhnsville
The West End Racket Club
The Holiday Inn (later the Days Inn) Rt 309
The Paddock restaurant
The Village Inn
The Starlite Diner -- Bob Nagle says “I joined Rotary in July,1992. We met at Starlite Diner at that time, and the roof leaked like crazy.
We moved to the Luther Crest Retirement Community starting in 1995 and as of this January 2016 update we still are there.
Where we Live:
The AW Club members primarily are from the northwest corner of Lehigh County and the west end of Allentown as it started. Members over time relocated southward into Lower Macungie Township and Emmaus, but stayed in the club and brought others in.
Schools and AWRC:
There are two school districts within the club’s covered area, Parkland and Northwestern Lehigh. Our Dictionary project for 3rd graders started in 2005 also extended into Salisbury Township’s Truman Elementary school.
Fundraisers:
Judge Cahn said that Fundraisers in the late 1960s to early 70s consisted of auctioning off baskets of fruit each week that members brought in from their farms and orchards. The fruit baskets weekly were brought by Rudy Mohr (Charter Member) and were prepared by his wife for our club. Also at Christmas time they sold many Claxton fruit cakes.
Bill Weber recalls that during his presidency 1982-83 and for several years after, our club ran a "Lobster Bake" as a fundraiser. It was held at Willow Tree Rest in Orefield. Bill made contact with a Lobster fishermen co-op in Portland and would remove the rear seats from his airplane, fly to Maine, load up with Lobster and return in time for the event. Geoff Legg flew up with Bill on occasion. It was always a lot of fun; as Rotarians we always found ways to make it even more interesting, e.g. holding Lobster Races, etc. George Ikeda has memories also. We never made a lot of money but always we had a lot of fun and fellowship. Our Rotaryanns were always a big help in putting it on.
Gloria Zimmerman said “In my very early years as a member, we had BBQ Chicken dinners as a fundraiser at Willow Tree Park in Leather Corner Post. “People would buy tickets and go there to eat or take out.”
In 1993 the club held its first annual charity auction. The charity auction replaced several smaller fundraisers a year. The idea was to find one big fundraiser that could net more than the smaller ones and get the whole club involved.
Dave Dries said that the first year the net was in the area of $8000 and peaked with a net of about $20,000 before the market crash in the late 2000's. It tapered off to about $10,000 before dying. The auction became the club's primary fundraising event and raises about $15,000 annually for charitable giving. At about 2007 we began to hold other fundraisers because the auction proceeds were small for so much effort.
Credit also goes to Ralph Zettlemoyer and his Auction. Even after he handed the reins over to his son, we continued to use their services.
Note that in 2004 we established the AW Foundation as a separate 501 ( C ) 3 to accommodate proper IRS credit for donations.. Bob Nagle was the founding chair. Gloria Zimmerman was President that year.
Four times we held Reverse Raffles selling $100 tickets that allowed you and a guest to attend an evening event with snacks and the drawing for multiple prizes. Usually a Silent Auction was held as well at the event. But there was some reluctance to hold a “gambling” event and the net proceeds were too low for the work involved.
In the Summers of 2013, 14 and 15 Mike and AJ Henry led a committee and held an afternoon Pig Roast at Ontelaunee Park. Sometimes there was a silent auction too. Mike Henry passed away in April 2017 at age 77 and the event starting in September 2017 is named in his honor.
In May of 2015 we held the first annual Tempting Tastes event at the Holiday Inn in Breinigsville with 235 attending for food samples, a silent auction, fellowship, and a live auction. The net was $29,000 for “good works.” Tempting Tastes 2, 3 and 4 each raised about $35 to $30,000. TT5 is being planned.
And periodically as events warrant we collect cash donations for disaster relief ShelterBoxes, and almost monthly about $250 for produce items for the Lowhill Food Pantry.
Tempting Tastes 2 and 3 held in 2016 and 2017 each netted about $30,000 for AW Rotarians to use for good works.
Youth Education and Leaderships:
Since its inception, the club has actively participated in Rotary International's Student Exchange Program both hosting and sending students abroad almost every year and holding membership positions on the District committee for most of that time.
Judge Cahn says that in the late 1960s AW Rotarians already were giving scholarships to High School students. They started with Northwestern Lehigh, and later added Parkland. As far back as 2001 we added Lehigh Career & Technical Institute and Lehigh Carbon Community College. Bob Nagle tells us that scholarships were set at $500 in the early years. In May of 2015 there were 8 #1,000 and one $500 scholarship awarded. In May 2017 we awarded 10 scholarships each of $1,000 to H.S. seniors from Northwestern, Parkland, LCTI and LCCC.
Ernie Boll was AWRC President in 1972-73, and he recalls that Summer Youth programs were done for many years. This is when youths travel to another country for 3 weeks in the Summer. And then usually that foreign host family sends a student to be hosted here the next year. Ernie and his wife Sandi traveled many times as Chaperones for the Summer Youth Exchange.
Every year the club sponsors a student from both high schools -- sometimes others -- for the Camp Neidig leadership program. In RI this is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). In our district it was championed by a man named Neidig and we honor him.
In 1995 the club organized and sponsored one of the first youth leadership conferences in the district.
We also started a financial literacy program for high school students at the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute to educate young adults on family budgeting, credit and spending, and financial planning.
We are the district leader in the Dictionary Project for third graders distributing them each Fall since 2005. Bill and Yvette Palmer initiated this and delegated the chairmanship to Bob Nagle. We have dispersed close to 10,000 books to third graders at this writing.
In 2010 AW Rotarians were among the first clubs in the district to conduct a Speech contest for HS students with the subject being Rotary’s Four Way Test. Winner s move on to regionals and then a district final. We did not offer this in early 2015 but will in 2016.
Programs and Services for the Elderly :
Bob Nagle said “The bingo games at Cedarbrook were a big item on a yearly basis,” Bill Palmer remembers participating in 2001.
Several times a year club members volunteer for Meals on Wheels deliveries starting in the mid-1990’s and continuing to the present day. At that time member AnnaJean Henry was the Director.
Every year since meeting at Luther Crest, in 1995, at Christmas time the club members sponsor a high school -- recently LCCC -- chorus performance for the residents of Luther Crest.
Community Service Projects :
In 1993 the club adopted the Lehigh County Rodale Fitness and Cycling Park in Trexlertown as a community cleanup and service project. Club Rotarians work a half day once or twice each year to clean up or improve things and still do.
We also assisted in various phases of the restoration of Ontelaunee Park in New Tripoli. We installed flagpoles at its entrance in 2003-04 with Joel Masiko the taskmaster. Later we contributed about $30,000 to help fund building the band shell which was installed for Rotary's 100th anniversary in 2005. And we provide annual clean-ups and plantings there as well.
We also give money and volunteer support to the Lowhill Church Food Pantry. Monthly cash collections provides about $300 each to purchase fresh produce for their clients, a very desirable food not usually available in food pantries.
The AWRC Snack Pack program was begun in 2013 starting in the Northwestern Lehigh School District. These are food packs given to food insecure children K through 12 to feed them over a weekend. In 2014 a similar program began in the Parkland School District with AW Rotarians leading with funds, volunteers and the work of some Interact Club members. In January 2016 we increased the distribution in the NWL SD to weekly.
Gloria Zimmerman recalls that in the early 1990s we did a coat project securing a grant from the district.
During Dave Dries’ presidency Dave had as his goal for the club members to honor a Professional Business Person of the Year. Bob Nagle was the Vocational Service Chair and he put this together and the first award was in 1999, and it continues. In late 2015 its name was changed to the Professional Service Award to broaden its applications. The award first was done in 2004, and given to Bev and Ken Kistler of Kistler Pole Buildings.
Over the years as needs arrive AW Rotarians decide to apply some of the funds we raised to support other organizations in the Lehigh Valley. Examples are The Community Music School, Meals on Wheels and the Community Bike Works.
Starting in 2013 AW Rotarians began to volunteer as “Angels” at the baseball games at the Miracle events in Schnecksville. In 2014 and again in 2015 we attended the October Halloween Party there and distributed items to about 500 children. We did the Halloween Party in 2017 too.
In 2014 we teamed up with the Allentown RC and held a luncheon meeting with the U.N. Ambassador from the Ukraine as the guest speaker for 200 guests.
In 2017 we formed a Rotary Community Corps, the first in our District, that is the group of volunteer non-Rotarians tha do the work of the Snack Packs in the Northwestern school district each week.
Interact Clubs:
Bob Nagle said “Bill Masters ran the Northwestern Lehigh Interact Club about the time that I joined (1992), and then it went dormant. It was reactivated in 2007, and my granddaughter, Christine, was President of the Club in that period.”
The Interact club at Parkland High School was chartered in September of 2014.
International Service Programs:
The club members actively supports the Youth Exchange Program, and the Group Study Exchange Program until the latter was shut down with changes in the Rotary Foundation ways of funding.
The club members always have provided significant support for the Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund and PolioPlus offering matching funds every year with members usually on a waiting list to participate with the matching program.
Our club members over the years have been financially supportive of the many Rotaplast missions world-wide.
We helped fund the 2008-09 Mosquito Net project in malaria-infested areas particularly in Africa
.
Since their introduction in 2001, we buy Shelter Boxes to be shipped to disaster areas around the world.
Over the years club members helped host a visiting Group Study Exchange (GSE) team Germany, Argentina, Colombia, the Caribbean, the Netherlands, Japan and the Philippines. Visiting team members stayed in the homes of our members when in our part of the district. Judge Cahn remembers having non-Rotarians from New Zealand in his home circa
1970, among others.RI stopped funding the GSE programs in about 2012.
In 2010-11 AW Rotarians were involved with a water well and distribution system through a “Matching Grant” -- now called a “Global Grant” for The Philippines.
In 2010 AW Rotarians joined with Engineers Without Borders in efforts to rebuild the buildings and systems of a school in Sierra Leone, Africa. AW members of EWB have traveled to Sierra Leone for weeks at a time to direct and to work on projects of Solar power and water system.
Grants:
Starting in Rotary Year 2009-10 our RC applied for a “District Simplified Grant” and received funds to purchase a computer for the Lowhill Food Pantry. The name was changed to “District Grant” and in 2013-14 our club members began to seek funds for the Snack Pack program, and for projects for the Centennial School in Sierra Leone, Africa
.
In 2014-15 Herb Klotz led the successful effort to set up a “Global Grant” for $30,000 partnering with the Bo RC in Sierra Leone.
In early 2017 AW Rotarians executed a District Grant to bring two Ukrainian Physical Therapists to Allentown for 2 weeks of training in current projects.
Vocational Service:
Gloria Zimmerman noted that we did visit Cedarbrook for a breakfast meeting. She said circa 2010 we held a breakfast meeting at Wegmans and they were the program.
Vern Fenstermaker recalls that AW members visited the Interact club meetings and talked about the members’ individual vocations.Vernon passed away in July 2017 at age 97 after 50 years of Rotary service.
Around 1999 Bob Nagle as Vocational Service Chair began the annual Professional Business Person of the year. See “Community Service.”
Bob Nagle said that the club on several occasions visited LCTI for breakfast meetings with Clyde Hornberger, Director, and occasionally visited other companies. In 2014 we held a regular meeting at Northwestern Lehigh School.
In May of 2014 and 2015 we held a breakfast meeting at LCCC at which we awarded the annual scholarships.
Social Events:
We hold annual Christmas Parties, Picnics, or other social events like our monthly Dining Out at area restaurants.
Bob Nagle noted that the earliest picnics were at Bill Masters Place -- they had a Pavilion -- , thence to the Webers Farm in Emmaus. Vern said that at the early club picnics, two members hauled their gas grills up to cook whatever we had on the menu.
We had some wonderful group parties at Gwenn and Gary's (Englehardt) in recent years (2005-15).
Our Christmas parties frequently were at Brookside Country Club. The Fogelsville Hotel and The Cosmopolitan also served. For earlier Christmas parties they drew names and exchanged gifts.
The Iron Pigs AAA baseball team started playing in the new Allentown Coca Cola stadium in 2998.A few times our RC rented a pavilion and had a buffet and then watched the game.
Periodically we hold evening "Mixer" meetings that include potential new members.
District Events:
AW Rotarians enjoyed attending District Conferences. Ernie mentioned one in Atlantic City, NJ. And for the three members who served as D7430 Governor, AW Rotarians put on the annual district conference with much work and great results.
In June 2017 Bill and Sue Weber, Herb and Ronnee Klotz, and Jeanne Shipe attended the annual RI Convention in Atlanta, GA.
District Fundraiser:
In the Fall of2009 Past District Governor Yvette Palmer along with the Rotaract Club at DeSales University, started an annual "Purple Pinkie" 5K Run / Walk to raise funds for PolioPlus invitimg all D7430 RCs to participate. About $4,000 was raised.
After Yvette's passing in December 2011, the Yvette was named after her and continued. In 2015 the event was taken over by AWRC members and moved to the LCCC campus and held around World Polio Day in Ocvtober. The 2016 event netted $14,000 to Polio eradication. Herb Klotz was the race director and Barbara Kistler was the event coordinator. In October 2017 the event netted over $30,000 from district Rotarians for Polio Eradication.
Public Relations:
Every few years before the 2010 move to the ClubRunner software, we tabulated the members names and had an AWRC Directory printed for public use. The 2008-09 version include photos of each member and information about Rotary and our club goals. Then when we had a website and archiving files, it all went on-line.
Early in 2013 Club President Halyna Stegura initiated a PR committee for the club. Its first efforts were to create some updated Rack Cards for distribution and handouts that describe what the club is all about.
During the years before 2013 the decision was made to start using the ClubRunner software to generate and e-mail to all members – and friends – a weekly e-Bulletin. It struggled at first but in October 2012 Bill Palmer was asked to make it happen, and there has been one every week since.
Then the ClubRunner website that Club President Dr. Bob Gordon in 2010 installed and made work was addressed and brought up to date. A Facebook page started to be updated regularly as well.
The club members started to have a Rotary presence at the Northwestern Lehigh annual Night in the Country, and the LV Mall EXPO, and others where we distribute materials and tell our stories.
During 2014 Gloria Zimmerman built up a relationship with the Parkland and Northwester Press and regular articled about AW Rotarians and their good deeds have resulted.
In 2015-16 President Herb Klotz championed the leap to Social Media and AWRC has a presence now, as well as its own e-mail and “snail” mail addresses.
Club Documents:
There are AWRC Constitution and Bylaws write-ups that are kept current and in accord with the RI Manual of Procedure.
The AW Board of Directors (b.o.d.) periodically establishes a written Strategic Plan for the club, and it is updated at least annually.
Since 2008 AW has maintained a Member Manual that includes some prior b.o.d. decisions, and some standing committees are listed.
The AW b.o.d has been meeting monthly for decades and written meeting minutes were produced. The older minutes were on hard copies and may not be retrievable.
There is a written set of Bylaws for the AWRC Foundation from when it was formed in 2004.
All of the foregoing documents are available on the AWRC website since 2010. They also have been archived in Google Drive since late 2015.
Member Characteristics:
We always were supportive of the RI Foundation, both the Annual Fund and PolioPlus. Similarly our members supported other International efforts such as Wheelchairs, Rotaplast surgeries, ShelterBox USA, and mosquito nets.
Allentown-West Rotary Club members are proud of its diversity of members and activities, offering something for everyone in a friendly atmosphere. We foster fellowship, service, and support to RI's four (five, as of 2013) avenues of service.
We are a group of "doers." Our club also was the first club ever in District 7430 to have the first Hispanic/Latina woman club president Alicia Ruiz Orbin. We produced three district governors: Yvette Palmer, Bill Weber and Bill Palmer. Herb Klotz is our 4th and will serve as DG in 2019-20. Our club President that year is a Muslim.
It distinguished itself forever by providing the first woman District Governor for District 7430 in 2002-2003 with the election and service of Yvette Palmer.
In Nov 2015 Gloria Zimmerman wrote “I don’t believe we were ever a check writing Club.” We raised money and then did some good with it.
Awards:
Each year the RI President establishes goals for RCs and awards a “Presidential Citation” for meeting or exceeding them. AWRC members have earned that award since the year 2010, and possibly before that. We got the 2016-17 Citation again.
There also are annual awards for Interact Clubs, and for RI Foundation giving that we sometimes have earned. Starting in the 2013-14 Rotary Year the D7430 Governor also established an award which we earn.
The foregoing was compiled using interviews, questionnaires and personal experience ( starting in 1999 ) by Past District Governor, William Palmer. This version was released in January 2016 and posted to the AWRC website and archived on Google Drive. It then was updated by Palmer in July 2017, and March of 2018.
Traditions
Annual Changeover ---
Longtime member of AWRC, Stanley Drabick, in July 2018 said that he is retiring from Allentown West Rotary after 40 years--having joined in 1978. He is spending more time caring for his wife, Sally, and still maintaining two properties.
Over the years Stan has joined in many service projects in our community. A few years back he helped paint the band shell at Ontelaunee Park. And he also refinished the table-top lectern that we use at our meetings.
Stan spoke about the history of the Japanese exchange student and the painting that we pass down from president to president each year at Changeover. It is possible that the father of the exchange student was a member of the Hanawa Japan Rotary Club. This is a very special original painting of the Mountains in Japan. This tradition began when the very grateful Father resented it to AW Rotarians for all that they did for his daughter.
Here is AWRC President Jeanne Shipe 2018-19 holding the painitng that she received at our changeover meeting.
