WELCOME
Welcome to your newly designed Palmer Post. We know that Rotarians get a lot of email, and we know that Rotarians lead busy lives. You will now receive the Palmer Post once a month, in an easy-to-read format, with  the important news first. If you want the details of what occurs at a meeting, such as who won the door prize and who gave happy dollars, you are welcome to attend the meetings in person or via Zoom.  If you are the chair of a committee that needs publicity, please contact the editor via email ([email protected]) and we'll be happy to include your information in the next newsletter, and/or create a social post about it for you. Comments are welcome!

FLAGS FOR  UNITY
FLAGS FOR UNITY

Our major fundraiser for the 2024-25 Rotary year will be Flags for Unity, led by PE Earnie Bliss. A four-day extravaganza, it will take place beginning Thursday, May 22 and continue through Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.

This program, which we are anticipating will result in a net profit of $18,000, will depend heavily on the investment of our club's volunteers. While a handful of members have already stepped forward and have begun in the planning phase, many more will be needed to bring this project to fruition.

Flags for Unity will be a family-friendly patriotic salute to our country. Hundreds of flags will be planted in the ground in grid formation (picture Arlington National Cemetery), and the community and business sponsors will be invited to purchase flags at a cost of around $65 each, to be picked up at the end of festivities.

Activities during the commemoration period can include such things as professional fly-overs, sky divers, musicians, and more. Volunteers are needed for many jobs, some long-term and some closer to the holiday. For example, volunteers will be needed to create the plan for laying out the flags, to actually plant the flags, to keep track of the purchasers, create a spreadsheet for the sponsors, help with the distribution of flags on the last day, seek out sponsors, and much, much more.

Anyone interested in joining this committee, or looking for more clarity, is invited to contact Earnie Bliss at [email protected]. Help us make this a successful event that will enable us to fulfill our service commitments in the following Rotary year!
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Another Successful STEM YEA and Camp Neidig Summer!

Attend our breakfast meeting on July 24 to hear about this year's STEM YEA and Camp Neidig programs. According to volunteers, administrators, and campers, both were complete successes! But don't take our word for it; come hear for yourself from the people who were there. Below are some photos from STEM YEA to give you just a taste of what students did while experiencing this immersive program, in its third year. Students who attended STEM YEA and Camp Neidig will be in attendance at our breakfast to tell us all about their experiences.

FUTURE PROGRAM
At our August 14 meeting, our speaker will be Christopher Malone whose presentation will be about the evolution of Moravian Bethlehem from a closed community to an open society. Christopher is curator and scholar on Pennsylvania German material culture with a focus on the Moravians. He holds master's degrees from both Syracuse University and the Winterthur Program. Currently, he is the curator of Historic Trappe and the Lutheran Archives Center in Philadelphia. If you aren't familiar with the little town of Trappe, it's located between Pottstown and King of Prussia, and is home to some very interesting early American historical sites.
 DINING  OUT
 DINING OUT HITS REFRESH

AWRC has chosen to use the first week of the month as a dining out event. If you are fairly new to our club, you may not be familiar with Dining Out. Here's how it works:

  • One member identifies a restaurant that would be group-friendly, and checks with management to be sure they can handle a large group. (Usually 12-25 people.)image
  • The member notifies the Dining Out chair, and the club is then notified of the month in which the event will take place.
  • If a menu is available, it is sent to members, who must RSVP by a given date.
  • The management is notified that we are coming, and given a final count by a specified time.
  • We gather together and have a great time!

Note: We need a new volunteer for this easy-to-handle chairmanship.

Dining outs are also a great time to introduce prospective members to Rotary. They will meet club members at a purely social occasion, and can decide if they'd like to know us better.
